What is Portable Records Management?
One of CableSolve’s unique features is the inclusion and utilisation of Hand Held Barcode Scanners. With near identical software to the desktop, organisations can use the devices to capture data (both cabling and equipment), view floor plans, rack elevations and perform reporting functions to name a few.
There are many benefits to be had by utilising such technology, with the most prominent being the ability to be able to record any changes where and when they happen.
Gone are the days of filling out a piece of paper, only for it to be left in an in-tray, or worse, taken home that evening. With the ability to synchronise the data as soon as the change has been made, the accuracy of the database can be easily maintained.
Barcode ScanningBarcode technology is used in nearly every industry Worldwide for several reasons. The main reason is the accuracy of the data that is captured. Secondly, the ease at which the data can be captured ensures that productivity is maximised within any organisation. CableSolve can read barcodes from a wide range of formats, 1 dimensional, 2 dimensional, code 128, Symbian etc. |
Mobile ComputingIn a world full of technology, it's amazing that organisations are still utilising paper spreadsheets, or static floor plans to audit and record equipment moves. CableSolve utilises Windows Mobile computers with built in barcode scanning engines to capture all moves, adds and changes. Organisations do not need to carry around a large laptop or netbook, with the scanners resembling a large mobile phone (actually, some have the ability to be utilised as a mobile phone and GPS receiver as well). |
Moves, Adds and Changes on the flyImagine being able to capture a Move of a server between two racks as and when it happens. Or, the moving of a user’s pc equipment (phone, monitor etc) by just scanning the barcodes of each piece of equipment, then scanning the barcode of the destination work space. CableSolve has built in functions to assist in these processes, replicating the 'human' way that these moves take place today. |
Graphical Floor PlansThe burden on training new staff members to the locations of various departments or staff's locations can not only take time, but ultimately costs the firm money in downtime (both for the IT staff member, but also the users who's equipment is not working). CableSolve has the ability to import floor plans for each and every level in your organisation, highlighting the 'function' areas for your departments, and also the equipment for individual users. Imagine the money saved by simply being able to search for a user’s PC's id, or barcode, then clicking on the linked floor plan and having the directions in the palm of your hand. |
One Click connectivity detailsThere is a perception in many organisations that most outages are either caused by the 'cabling', or by 'network issues'. The facts however, don't support this, but this is normally where the search for a 'server outage' is started. CableSolve greatly reduces the time to resolve these outages by allowing cabling/networking staff to show end-to-end connectivity of the server connections, including fibre, copper, power and KVM. With the ability to quickly scan any of the patch cables connected to a server, uses are able to quickly determine if the cables are still connected, if they are connected to the correct switch port, or if a change has taken place. |
What are the Business Benefits?
CableSolve has many benefits for an organisations to be able to:
- Greatly reduced time to fault find potential cable related outages by eliminating the tug-n-trace method
- Decrease MAC times dramatically, resulting in revenue savings
- Track changes to the cabling infrastructure where and when they happen
- Ensure documentation is updated where and when the changes happens
- Have access to all of your records even if your infrastructure is not available (network outage, power outage)
